Welcome to the Young Israel of Wavecrest & Bayswater Web Site
Our Shul has a long and distinguished history of serving as the center of the Wavecrest & Bayswater Jewish Communities. On Shabbos and all week long we
offer a full set of services to the community ranging from inspirational services led by our members to insightful Torah study classes for men and for
women given by our Rabbi, Rabbi Eliezer Feuer and by other scholars who we are proud to have in our community. Our highly active Youth Department provides our
children with fun and educational activities including our tremendously successful Shabbat groups led by our talented and enthusiastic youth leaders.
The warm atmosphere that is fostered in our Shul is one in which the often used phrase “The YIWB family” is not just a cliché but a fact. Our Shul provides many
opportunities for young and old to meet and greet and work together. Whether at times of joy or in times of need, our family will be at your side. Our various
lecture series often attract world renowned scholars to the Shul to present lectures on a wide range of topics. Following our Sunday morning Breakfast, the
Gemara shiur is well known as a wonderful source of insight as taught by Rabbi Feuer, our own Mara D’asra.
Many other exciting activities await your family members of all ages when you make the YIWB your home.
A Short History of the YIWB
In 1956, six Orthodox Jewish families who lived in Wavecrest met to plan the creation of their own local Shul. They wanted an Orthodox Shul that would serve the spiritual and social needs of their families and of other Orthodox Jewish families who were moving to Wavecrest and Bayswater. Working with the National Council of the Young Israel, these six families began the Young Israel of Wavecrest and Bayswater.
The YIWB’s first home was a converted storefront under the elevated subway near Beach 25th Street. The Shul first officially opened its doors on Shabbos Nachamu 5717 (August 10, 1957). As the Kehilla grew, the members of the YIWB built a new Shul building and relocated to 2360 Brookhaven Avenue in Wavecrest. Eleven years ago, the YIWB moved to its current location, 2716 Healy Avenue.
Over the last 50 years, the Young Israel of Wavecrest and Bayswater has been the focal point of the Bayswater Orthodox community. It has provided not only a place for Jewish families to Daven, learn, and attend Shiurim, but also a place for all families to grow in Yiddishkeit and Mitzvos and to create life-long friendships.
